NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest public health care system in the United States, and their facility in Elmhurst, Queens serves one of the nation’s most ethnically and linguistically diverse neighborhoods. NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst’s medical residents come from near and far to train in one of their seven residency programs.
In this edition of Behind the White Coat, Dinali Fernando, MD, MPH, discusses her work at the Libertas Center for Human Rights, which provides survivors of torture and human rights violations with comprehensive medical, mental health, social, and legal services to help them regain function and restore humanity in their lives.
The work led by Dr. Fernando has created a remarkable learning environment for residents that train at Elmhurst. With a grant from the New York State Department of Health through the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program, Dr. Fernando and her team study patient outcomes and determine the best ways to address their patients’ unique needs.
The video also features Benjamin McVane, MD, a former resident at Elmhurst, who discusses the opportunities he received during his training to learn about social determinants of health and treating vulnerable populations while working with the Libertas Center.
