After reports that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo favored moving New York’s presidential primary to February—and combining it with State and Congressional primaries—legislative leaders came out against the plan. Governor Cuomo eventually said it was “not a viable date politically.”
New York will likely hold two different primaries in 2020: the presidential primary on April 28 and a combined Congressional/State primary on June 23.
Holding the State primary on that date is a departure that will almost certainly disrupt the Albany legislative session, which traditionally concludes toward the end of June. Legislators will want to return home at least a few weeks prior in order to campaign, so the Assembly and Senate could end the session early or return to Albany later.
The general election will be held November 3.
