NYSPFP Workshop Details Toolkit for Preventing Inpatient Falls

February 5, 2018

The New York State Partnership for Patients (NYSPFP), a joint initiative of GNYHA and the Healthcare Association of New York State, hosted a workshop on January 25 to highlight the Fall TIPS (Tailored Interventions for Patient Safety) Toolkit, a health information technology intervention that engages patients and their families in a three-step fall prevention process:

  1. Conducting fall risk assessments
  2. Developing a tailored fall prevention plan
  3. Implementing the tailored fall prevention plan consistently

The event was live-streamed to a statewide audience, with more than 100 hospitals participating.

Patricia C. Dykes, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, Senior Nurse Scientist and Program Director for Research in the Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice and the Center for Nursing Excellence at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, detailed the Fall TIPS Toolkit’s evidence base and reviewed the Patient-Centered Fall Prevention study, for which she was the principal investigator. Jason Adelman, MD, MS, Chief Patient Safety Officer & Associate Chief Quality Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, and Maureen Scanlan, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services at Montefiore Health System, discussed their experience adapting and implementing the Fall TIPS interventions across multiple sites using various electronic and paper medical record systems.

The speakers also highlighted an upcoming Fall TIPS collaborative in which they seek to enroll hospitals. Benefits for participants include access to monthly reports on the hospital’s progress at preventing falls using the toolkit. Participating hospitals must submit monthly de-identified data on engaging patients in the three-step fall prevention process, patient falls, and fall-related injuries.
