NYSPFP Sepsis Forum Tackles Fluid Resuscitation Issues

June 11, 2018

The New York State Partnership for Patients (NYSPFP), a joint initiative of GNYHA and the Healthcare Association of New York State, recently held a regional forum at GNYHA on sepsis quality improvement. Attended and web streamed by more than 80 staffers from member hospitals, the forum addressed controversies and best practices for fluid resuscitation and management in sepsis care.

The forum was led by Laura Evans, MD, MSc, Associate Professor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine, Medical Director of Critical Care at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and Steering Committee member of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. Dr. Evans described the current evidence for fluid administration in sepsis care and facilitated a discussion among hospitals.

Dr. Evans also shared her experiences and strategies for meeting New York State fluid resuscitation measure requirements. Members detailed experiences with multiple sepsis topics, including the challenges of gaining administrative and clinician buy-in for fluid resuscitation. Hospitals also shared strategies for addressing clinician accountability and educating hospital leadership on the value of focused clinical improvement projects in achieving better outcomes. Members also discussed the usefulness of early-warning sepsis alerts via electronic medical records and the unintended effects of alarm fatigue on frontline staff.
