The New York City Marathon will be held this Sunday, November 3. Over 50,000 runners are expected to participate. The marathon will begin at 8:30 a.m., with staggered starts until 11:00 a.m., and will continue through the early evening. The course begins on Staten Island, ends in Central Park, and takes runners through all five boroughs with the majority of the race in Brooklyn, Queens and upper Manhattan.
Because the marathon will result in a number of street closures, hospitals in the vicinity of the marathon route should ensure that staff and visitors are informed of any closures that may impact facility access. Hospitals are also encouraged to review emergency plans.
Based on previous years, the New York Road Runners (NYRR) estimates approximately 5,600 visits to medical tents along the course, and around 25 transports to area hospitals by EMS. Medical care and transport will be handled by contracted providers. FDNY will have resources pre-deployed along the marathon course. New York City Emergency Management’s (NYCEM) Watch Command will closely monitor the event throughout the day, and NYPD will activate its Joint Operation Center. An NYCEM-hosted Interagency Command Center will be located near the finish line, and NYRR will operate its own Race Communications Center. A NYCEM informational bulletin is attached.
