GNYHA continues its strong support for graduate medical education (GME) as the new academic year begins at the nation’s teaching hospitals. Nearly 6,000 residency positions were filled across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, according to the National Residency Matching Program for the new academic year.
New York has the largest, most well-established GME infrastructure in the nation and trains the largest number of physicians annually (approximately 16,000). According to a 2017 report from the Center for Health Workforce Studies at the University at Albany, more than 17% of the more than one million active physicians in the US completed their residency training in New York.
GNYHA supports member teaching hospitals by providing the most current information on GME policy matters and legislative activity at both the Federal and State levels. GNYHA is actively involved with efforts of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the State and Federal Councils on Graduate Medical Education, and works closely with the Association of American Medical Colleges on GME legislation, including bills to support increased Medicare-funded GME slots at teaching hospitals.
This fall, GNYHA will host a symposium on Improving Residency Program Collaborations with Community-Based Organizations, at which GME leadership will discuss strategies for training residents on social determinants of health. GNYHA will also continue working in areas such as faculty development, physician workforce, and resident wellness.
