The GNYHA/United Hospital Fund (UHF) High Reliability Organization (HRO) Leadership Forum hosted a webinar featuring Michael Shabot, MD, FACS, FCCM, FACMI, Executive Vice President and System Chief Clinical Officer at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas. Memorial Hermann is a national leader in high reliability in health care, and Dr. Shabot’s leadership has earned Memorial Hermann multiple awards, including the 2013 John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality at the national level and the 2016 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
Dr. Shabot stressed the importance of board and leadership commitment to safety, saying that it helps drive the organization along its HRO journey. He noted how a culture transformation can occur once leadership makes safety a core value. Dr. Shabot also noted that even financially constrained safety net hospitals can become HROs if leadership makes a commitment, a message that resonated with most hospitals participating in this year’s GNYHA/UHF HRO Leadership Forum.
The GNYHA/UHF Leadership Forum will complete its fourth and final in-person learning session on May 9.
