GNYHA Webinar Highlights Best Practices for Serving Transgender Patients

September 28, 2020

GNYHA’s recent webinar on Transgender-Affirming Hospital Practices highlighted best practices for serving transgender patients. Alex S. Keuroghlian, MD, MPH, Director of Education and Training Programs at the Fenway Institute—a not-for-profit organization that ensures access to quality, culturally competent health care for traditionally underserved communities, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population—addressed how to create a transgender-affirming environment for patients and families and offered staff training suggestions.

Dr. Keuroghlian reviewed foundational concepts in LGBT+ care and the importance of affirming terminology and sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection. Dr. Keuroghlian also provided information on the health and health care disparities facing the transgender community. Dr. Keuroghlian reviewed best practices around gender-neutral bathrooms, rooming assignments, inclusive registration and medical history forms, and gender-inclusive terms and diagrams, and identified available training and patient education materials.

The briefing was recorded and is available here. Previous GNYHA briefings on transgender-affirming hospital practices and SOGI data collection also are available.
