GNYHA Webinar Addresses Collection of SOGI Patient Data

September 23, 2019

Alex S. Keuroghlian, MD, MPH, Director of the National LGBT Health Education Center, participated last week in GNYHA’s webinar on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection best practices. The Center is a program of the Fenway Institute, a not-for-profit organization focused on ensuring access to quality, culturally competent health care for traditionally underserved communities, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBT+) population. Dr. Keuroghlian shared best practice approaches to implementing a SOGI collection initiative in a clinical setting, including questions to ask, approaches to necessary staff training, and common implementation challenges. His presentation also detailed gender identity terminology and how SOGI data collection can address health disparities among the LGBTQ+ population.

GNYHA’s membership includes many outstanding leaders in LGBTQ+ health care who can serve as faculty for GNYHA’s programs. For this webinar, Barbara E. Warren, PsyD, CPXP, shared Mount Sinai Health System’s experiences implementing its own SOGI data collection initiative, including lessons learned. Dr. Warren is Director of LGBT Programs and Policies at Mount Sinai’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and an Assistant Professor of Medical Education at Icahn School of Medicine.

The webinar is part of GNYHA’s continuing LGBTQ+ learning series to share best practices among members. A recording of the webinar with related material is available here.
