GNYHA to Highlight Programs Addressing Food Insecurity

April 8, 2019

GNYHA’s Social Determinants of Health Learning Series continues with an April 26 event on models to address food insecurity and food access. The program will highlight hospital/community-based organization partnerships and projects that help individuals meet basic food-related needs as part of broader population health initiatives.

Kim Prendergast, Community Health and Nutrition Consultant at Feeding America, will discuss the organization’s efforts to relieve hunger across the country. Her keynote will highlight the experiences of food banks and other emergency food providers in partnering with health care providers to address food-related needs. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Food to Overcome Outcome Disparities (FOOD) program and Public Health Solutions’ Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Bundle will be highlighted. The FOOD program combines food distribution, benefit connections, clinician education, and research to improve food security among immigrants and medically underserved individuals undergoing cancer treatment. The FNS Bundle is designed to improve health outcomes and reduce potentially avoidable admissions by connecting health care organizations with food-related service providers.

The series is part of GNYHA’s broader member support related to assessing and addressing social determinants of health. More information on GNYHA’s work in this area is available here.
