GNYHA, Members to Present at National Homeland Security Conference

June 4, 2018

The 2018 National Homeland Security Conference will be held in New York City on July 9 through July 12. Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) staff will present workshops on two emergency management initiatives at the event.

Jenna Mandel-Ricci, Vice President, Professional and Regulatory Affairs, will discuss New York City’s Efforts to Improve Pre-Hospital to Hospital Communication during Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs), with co-presenters from the Fire Department of the City of New York, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and Mount Sinai West. The workshop will showcase how a workgroup process resulted in the adoption of a four-level categorization system for MCIs in New York City. Each level is associated with a predetermined number—or fixed allotment—of critical and non-critical patients who hospitals should be prepared to receive during the MCI, which inform emergency medical services (EMS) patient transportation decisions and give hospitals additional situational awareness.

Patrick Meyers, Senior Project Manager, Emergency Management, with representatives from the New York Police Department and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, will detail efforts to improve coordination between law enforcement agencies and health care facilities. They also will discuss a law enforcement agency forum hosted by GNYHA in 2017, during which numerous Federal, State, and local law enforcement entities and dozens of health care facilities convened to discuss one another’s needs and areas for enhanced coordination. GNYHA looks forward to showcasing these initiatives for a national audience.
