GNYHA Launches HRO Leadership Forum

January 22, 2018

GNYHA, with support from the United Hospital Fund, launched its High Reliability Organization (HRO) Leadership Forum on January 11. The HRO Leadership Forum was developed to help hospitals and health systems incorporate high reliability principles and practices into their organizations, with a specific focus on leadership’s role in promoting a culture of safety and commitment to performance improvement.

Erin Dupree, MD, FACOG, most recently the Chief Medical Officer and Vice President for The Joint Commission’s Center for Transforming Health Care, provided an overview of HRO principles, which requires leadership to create a shared definition of harm and how health care organizations can avoid significant consequences while working within a highly complex operational structure. Senior leadership from 12 member hospitals discussed leading change in their facilities and the importance of patient engagement as an organizing HRO principle. Facilities also participated in group exercises and reviewed their facilities’ baseline self-assessment relating to HRO principles.

The next session will be held on February 1 and focus on leadership behaviors relating to HRO principles.
