GNYHA’s first Quality Fundamentals course was attended by frontline clinical staff, including physicians, nursing staff, quality improvement coordinators, and data abstracters from 10 member hospitals. The course provided an overview of the science and tools of quality improvement (QI) using case studies of common clinical challenges.
Participants could opt to review QI by designing a QI project with new skills learned early in the course, or apply QI data principles to a realistic data set to practice data analysis and interpretation skills.
Using information from the case studies, participants designed quality improvement projects that included data collection strategies and ways to evaluate a project’s success and sustainability.

Course evaluations were overwhelmingly positive and included comments such as “the trainers were outstanding. The case studies, particularly the real-world examples of sepsis and catheter-associated urinary tract infections were very useful.”
GNYHA will offer the course again in late summer to fall.
