A recent GNYHA Health Systems Engineering Community of Practice (CoP) meeting provided an opportunity for those who work or have an interest in the health care systems engineering field to gather, network, share, and learn from their peers.
Mohammad T. Khasawneh, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Systems Science & Industrial Engineering (SSIE) at Binghamton University, reviewed systems engineering and its growing demand and impact on the health care industry. Dr. Khasawneh also shared insights and discussed emerging trends and new innovations within the systems engineering field, including design thinking, patient journey mapping, and process and data mining-based lean health care.

The CoP format is a supportive, peer-based setting that provides professional development opportunities for health systems engineering staff. A Catholic Health Services of Long Island Physician Partners analyst described how her team applied system design to create a value-based care roadmap and to develop strategic goals and measurements toward success. A Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center performance improvement engineer shared a project in which her team used the 5S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) methodology to optimize the clean-room space in a nursing unit and reduce spending, inventory, motion waste, and turnaround time for item retrievals. System analysts for LiveOnNY, an organ procurement organization, discussed how they remodeled donor risk indexes to significantly improve liver and kidney graft survival predictability and overall organ utilization.
GNYHA will continue the CoP forum to support hospitals that invest in this unique, valuable discipline and those interested in learning more about the applications of systems science in the health care field.
