GNYHA Conference Seeks to Prevent Falls in Hospitals

October 29, 2018

The New York State Partnership for Patients (NYSPFP), a joint initiative of GNYHA and the Healthcare Association of New York State, hosted a workshop at GNYHA on October 24 to train hospital staff on implementing the Fall TIPS (Tailored Interventions for Patient Safety) Toolkit. The event marked the beginning of a new partnership between NYSPFP and the national Fall TIPS Collaborative.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Montefiore Medical Center, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital formed the Collaborative to share the Fall TIPS Toolkit and ensure that all patients have access to evidence-based fall prevention care. Participating facilities reduced falls by up to 25% on units that applied the interventions compared to control units.

Patricia C. Dykes, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, a principal investigator of the study from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, discussed the Fall TIPS Toolkit’s evidence base and reviewed the Patient-Centered Fall Prevention study. The Toolkit engages patients and families in a three-step fall prevention process:

  1. Conducting fall risk assessments
  2. Developing a tailored or personalized fall prevention plan
  3. Implementing a consistent tailored fall prevention plan

Hospitals can formally enroll in the Fall TIPS Collaborative on its website. There is no cost to join the Collaborative, but participating hospitals are asked for monthly submissions of de-identified data on engaging patients in the three-step fall prevention process, patient falls, and fall-related injuries.
