The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) last week announced the redistribution of Medicare resident slots resulting from the closure of Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, located in Pawtucket. Section 5506 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) authorized the resident cap redistribution program for closed teaching hospitals. The ACA directs CMS to first distribute the slots to hospitals within the same or a contiguous core-based statistical area (CBSA) as the closed hospital, then to hospitals located in the same state, then to hospitals located in the same general region, and then to all other hospitals.
With this round (Round 13), 72.62 direct graduate medical education resident slots and 73.66 indirect medical education slots were available for redistribution. While most of the slots were redistributed to a Rhode Island-based hospital, NYU Winthrop Hospital, South Nassau Communities Hospital, and Stony Brook University Hospital also received slots this round as they are located in a contiguous CBSA.
